Tower Lights in Industrial Automation: A Buyer’s Guide for Indian OEMs

Tower lights — also called signal towers or stack lights — are the visual backbone of any factory floor. Each coloured module communicates machine status at a glance: red for fault, yellow for warning, green for running, blue for material call, and white for general status. Here is what matters when selecting one.

Key Specifications

  • Light Source: Always choose LED. LEDs last 50,000 to 100,000 hours versus 1,000 to 2,000 for incandescent, consume 60-80 percent less power, and maintain consistent brightness.
  • Diameter: 55mm is the sweet spot for most machine-mounted applications. Use 70mm only for outdoor or very high mounting.
  • Voltage: 24V DC is the standard for PLC-controlled machines. Integrates directly with your panel DC bus.
  • Stack Count: 2-stack (red/green) for simple run/stop, 3-stack (red/yellow/green) for run/warning/fault — covers 80 percent of applications.
  • Buzzer: Specify when the operator is not always in line of sight. Look for 80-90 dB output.

LED vs Incandescent Tower Lights: Why Upgrading Saves Money and Downtime

Many Indian factories still run incandescent tower lights. The periodic bulb replacements feel routine, but the true cost is staggering when you add it up.

The Hidden Costs

An incandescent bulb lasts 3-6 months on two shifts. A factory with 50 machines needs 300-600 bulb replacements per year, consuming 75-300 man-hours of labour. Energy: incandescent draws 5-10 watts per layer versus 1-2 watts for LED — an extra 16,000-28,000 rupees per year across 50 machines. Plus progressive dimming and heat-induced lens damage.

The LED Advantage

Over 5 years, 50 machines with incandescent need 1,500-3,000 bulb replacements costing 1.5-3 lakh in parts plus hundreds of hours of labour. LED: zero replacements, consistent brightness for 50,000+ hours. Pays for itself in year one.

VXT-TL55: Drop-In Replacement

Standard 22.5mm panel cutout — compatible with most existing installations. Remove old unit, install VXT-TL55, no panel modification needed.

How to Select the Right Tower Light Configuration for Your Machine

How many stack colours do you need? Here is a practical framework based on IEC 60073 and common Indian factory practice.

Colour Meanings (IEC 60073)

Red = fault/danger, Yellow = warning/caution, Green = normal/running, Blue = operator action needed, White = general status/power on.

Choosing Your Configuration

2-Stack (Red/Green): Simple run/stop. Manual presses, standalone packaging, basic conveyors. Use VXT-TL55-RG.
3-Stack (Red/Yellow/Green): Most popular. CNC, injection moulding, assembly lines, packaging lines. Use VXT-TL55-RGY.
4-Stack (add Blue): Material replenishment signal for automotive assembly, pharma packing, warehouse picking.
5-Stack (add White + Buzzer): Complex automated lines in food, pharma, semiconductor.

When to Add a Buzzer

When operators manage multiple machines, tower is far from working position, or fault requires immediate response. VXT-TL55 buzzer outputs ~85 dB. Stocked as ready items from Delhi NCR.

Tower Light Mounting Options Explained: Panel, Pole, Side-Mount and More

How you mount a tower light determines visibility, vibration resistance, and professional appearance. Five common methods:

1. Direct Panel Mount

Threaded base through 22.5mm cutout with locknut. Simplest, cheapest, no accessories needed. For flat-topped enclosures.

2. Round Base Mount

70mm base plate screws to surface. Better for thin surfaces or retrofit. VXT-TL55-SZ2.

3. Pole Mount (Elevated)

Aluminium pole raises tower for visibility across the floor. Essential for production lines. VXT-TL55-LG1, VXT-TL55-LG2 with VXT-TL55-LJT1 sleeve.

4. Side-Mount Bracket

L-bracket for vertical surfaces — machine frame sides, walls, columns. VXT-TL55-CZ4.

5. Foldable Base

Swivel base for angle adjustment. Ideal for oblique viewing angles. VXT-TL55-SZ3, VXT-TL55-SZ4.

Best Practices

Mount at highest point. Route wires inside cable trays. Use strain relief. Apply thread-lock in high-vibration environments. Label colour meanings near the base.
