Every industrial control panel needs reliable DC power. PLCs, sensors, HMIs, communication modules, solenoid valves, and signal conditioners all require stable 24V DC, 12V DC, or 5V DC supplies to function correctly. DIN rail-mounted switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) have become the universal standard for delivering this power efficiently and reliably. This guide covers everything panel builders and OEMs need to know about selecting the right DIN rail power supply.

Why Switched-Mode Power Supplies?

Older linear power supplies converted AC to DC using a transformer and linear regulator, which was simple but inefficient. A typical linear supply operates at 40 to 60 percent efficiency, meaning 40 to 60 percent of the input power is wasted as heat. Switched-mode power supplies use high-frequency switching circuits to achieve 85 to 92 percent efficiency, dramatically reducing heat generation, energy waste, and the size of the unit.

Key Specifications for Selection

  • Output Voltage and Current :  The most common output voltages for industrial applications are 24V DC (for PLCs, sensors, and I/O modules), 12V DC (for certain HMIs, cameras, and LED strips), and 5V DC (for logic circuits and some communication modules). Size the current capacity with at least 20 to 30 percent headroom above the total connected load.
  • Input Voltage Range : Indian mains supply can fluctuate between 170V and 280V in many industrial areas. Choose a power supply with a wide input range, ideally 85-264V AC, to ensure stable output across all conditions.
  • Efficiency and Protection : Look for supplies rated at 88 percent efficiency or higher. Essential protections include short-circuit protection with automatic recovery, overload protection with hiccup mode, over-voltage protection, and over-temperature protection with auto-shutdown.
  • Operating Temperature Range : Standard industrial power supplies are rated for minus 20 to plus 60 degrees Celsius. Verify the derating curve — many supplies reduce output current above 45 or 50 degrees. Size for the derated current if your panel regularly exceeds 50 degrees internally.

VXT-DRI Series: Built for Indian Industrial Conditions

Voxintech offers the VXT-DRI series of DIN rail SMPS power supplies designed for the Indian market. Available in 24V, 12V, and 5V output voltages with power ratings from 15W to 480W, the VXT-DRI series features a universal 85-264V AC input range that handles Indian voltage fluctuations without derating. Every unit includes full protection circuits, LED power-on indication, and compact DIN rail mounting.
Through its factory-direct sourcing model and rigorous quality validation, Voxintech delivers these power supplies at 35 to 50 percent lower cost than comparable units from Mean Well, Omron, or Schneider. Ready stock is maintained at the Delhi NCR warehouse with same-week dispatch for standard SKUs.
